The hop is a small genus of flowering plants, deep–rooted to the temperate Northern Hemisphere. It is found in most countries of the North temperate zone and is a hardy, perennial herb which gives annual vines from a permanent crown. Vines may mature up to 25 feet in a single season but will die back to the crown each fall. Hops have separate male and female organs. Only the female produces the flowers that are used for brewing or medicinal purposes. The female blossoms, commonly known as hops , are used as flavoring and stabilizers during beer brewing . Male plants have no market value, but are used to pollinate females.
Hops are used as an external remedy in combination, as a poultice, with chamomile flowers or poppy heads as a fomentation for swelling of a painful nature, inflammation.
Dried female buds have a mild sedative impact on the central nervous system . It is used as a tea too. Hops are used in the treatment stress and anxiety. Pillows full of hops have also been used as a folk remedy for sleeplessness.
